Project Lifecycle & Forms
___ Collaborating on a Project
The CIC is here to connect industry and academia. We help coordinate construction-related research projects by bringing together the resources and expertise needed to develop innovative solutions for today’s construction industry!
___ Researchers
If you are a researcher who has a project that would benefit any aspect of the construction industry, we encourage you to contact us at cic@ualberta.ca.
Our team can help you develop or refine a project that fits with the CIC’s research priorities, and connect you with our industry partners who may be best positioned to collaborate on your research.

___ Industry
If you are an industry leader who has a particular problem that may be solved by academic research, please contact us at cic@ualberta.ca.
Our team can connect you with researchers in a variety of disciplines that are uniquely positioned to develop technologies that address industry challenges.
___ CIC Project Lifecycle
___
PROJECT INITIATION

The PI consults with the CIC team to provide input as necessary, and to ensure it aligns with the CIC’s research as as defined by the research roadmap. The CIC team may also make recommendations for, and introductions with, industry partners if the PI has not already secured industry support for the project.
The PI completes a Letter of Intent (LOI), and submits it by email to cic@ualberta.ca.
___
PROJECT EVALUATION & APPROVAL

The LOI is reviewed by the CIC’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and Executive Management Committee (EMC) to assess the project’s feasibility in terms of scope, budget, and timeline, and to ensure the proposed project meets the strategic direction of the CIC.
At each stage, the proposed project will either be
1) declined with feedback,
2) returned to the PI with requests for revisions,
3) approved with requests for minor revisions, or
4) approved and recommended to the next committee or granted final approval.
The SAC and EMC each meet 4 times annually. New or revised LOIs must be submitted two weeks prior to each committee meeting to be considered for review.
___
PROGRESS & REPORTING

Upon final approval from the EMC, the PI has 6 months to submit the project to NSERC before the CIC approval expires. If unable to submit the proposal to NSERC within this time, the PI submits a letter to the CIC explaining the reason for the delay.
The CIC releases project funds annually based on the NSERC approval date.
The PI submits the annual NSERC progress report to the CIC within the first 2 months of each new project year. The SAC reviews annual progress reports and provides feedback as necessary.
PIs of all CIC approved projects present on project status and findings annually at the CIC FORUM (June of every year).
___
PROJECT COMPLETION

Upon project completion, the PI submits the CIC Project Completion Report to the CIC within 3 months of the project completion date.
The project completion report will be distributed to CIC stakeholders, and may be published, in part, on the CIC website and the CIC Annual Report.
