About the competition

For the past 3 decades, the construction industry has made many advances. With the current rate of technological advancement, what could the construction industry look like in 2050? This competition welcomes out-of-the-box ideas that can revolutionize the construction industry through the use of advanced technologies, Construction 4.0 concepts, digitalization, IoT, robotics, and other innovative approaches. The proposed idea can aim to improve any aspect of the construction industry including, but not limited to, productivity, safety, design, construction methods, sustainability, etc. Competitors should present novel ideas or, at a minimum, extensions of existing solutions in a creative way and explain how their solution addresses social, environmental, and/or economic concerns.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Undergraduate and graduate students who have been registered within the last 12 months at a post-secondary institution in North America are eligible to participate in this competition.
  • Submissions are to be completed in teams of 2 to 5 people.
  • Teams of 3 or more people may have one participant who is not a student.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to form interdisciplinary teams with diverse backgrounds, knowledge and skill sets.

Three Honorable Mentions

The top 6 submissions will be presented to senior industry leaders at the Construction Innovation Centre (CIC) Forum event. The top 6 submissions will also be featured on the CIC website. Your idea may be passed on to CIC’s Strategic Advisory Committee consisting of key experts from industry, policy-making bodies, and academia who may provide feedback and direction to you in their effort to foster the development of new responses to all the varied challenges confronted by the construction industry.

___   Submission Requirement

Please submit a video less than 8 minutes in length that showcases your idea. The video could be an animation, 3D visualization, or even a recorded presentation, and the video could include a demonstration of the solution as design models, prototype, project or product sketches, new material, app, game, simulation, or any other creative option that the team deems suitable to present their innovative idea!

You must also submit a 1-page document (500 words maximum) answering the following three questions:

  1. How does your solution address a key challenge in the construction industry? (please describe your idea, and how your solution fits into the construction industry in 2050)
  2. Why does your idea or solution currently not exist? What barriers would need to be removed in order for your idea or solution to become a reality?
  3. What do you imagine would be the impact of your solution?
